Cahal Pech | A Maya Ruin

Another Maya ruin site checked off the list!  Today it was Cahal Pech, which is only a 10 minute walk uphill from downtown San Ignacio, Belize.  It's quite different from its nearest counterpart, Xunantunich, which is much more open space with El Castillo, the temple, dominating the site.

Cahal Pech is one of the more intimate Maya sites in the area, receiving fewer visitors than Xunantunich.  Next to me and Natasha, there was only four other people there at dusk.  I loved it!  You get more of a sense of how it was when the Mayan people lived here, going through the excavated tunnels and small unearthed labyrinths among the trees that defy gravity, hanging to the sides of the structures.
