Flores | Guatemala

The charming streets and alleys of Flores, Guatemala make for a great base to explore the surrounding Mayan treasures of this region of Guatemala. Flores is a small island village on Lake Peten Itza which was built over the old city of Tayasal and hosts lots of restaurants, hotels, guesthouses, handicraft and souvenir stores, Internet caffee’s, etc. The city of Flores is geared towards the tourists that are visiting the ruins of Tikal. This splendid Mayan site is 65km (40 miles) away from Flores and reachable by bus or car in 45 – 60 minutes. (source)

Exploring the Flooded Island of Flores, Guatemala

We took a weekend trip to Guatemala with the idea of seeing Tikal Maya Site and maybe stopping over in Flores, a tiny island in the Lago de Peten Itza.  Our adventure began in El Remate, a village in between Tikal and Flores, to give us a chance to see a bit more of Guatemala.

From the three places we visited, El Remate, Tikal, and Flores, I can say I absolutely love Guatemala!  The people are friendly, the beauty is awe-inspiring and plentiful, and the accommodations & cuisine are inexpensive and above average.
