Driving through Mexico to Belize we stopped in San Miguel de Allende, which was beautiful. You can find multiple blog posts and pictures about this city in my history. Now on the way back through Mexico from Belize, we wanted to see a new city, and chose San Luis Potosi, north of Mexico City off Highway 57.
We arrived to our hotel at dusk, quickly settled in and had the front desk get us a taxi into town. I read that in the Plaza de los Fundadores, the city “paints” a cathedral there with lights, the only place in all of Latin America that does this. The images I had seen were amazing and I HAD to go try to create my own images.
However the Festival of Lights was not happening on this night…maybe it was the wrong time of year. So Natasha and I roamed the streets a bit, then caught a taxi back before it got too late.
San Luis Potosi is quite large and the traffic can be overwhelming, but the sheer beauty of its architecture and history of the city required us to book another night’s stay. Initially we stayed in a hotel on the outskirts of town, but booked our second night downtown, about three blocks from the city center. This allowed us to keep the Jeep securely parked in a garage, and tour the town on foot.
Again it felt like we were the only ex-pats in this city. Maybe I thought this was strange only because when touring a big city anywhere else I have been, there are usually many nationalities represented. However in San Luis Potosi, a city of 2.5 million, Natasha and I seemed to be the only non-Mexicans. But who cares…The people were very friendly and we did not experience any problems or bad vibes.
You can spend a week here in San Luis Potosi and not see all that this city has to offer. That doesn’t include venturing into the countryside, where you can find jungles hiding waterfalls and ancient ruins. I’m once again glad we live by exploring new places and immersing ourselves in the culture. If we lived in fear, nothing would ever be gained.
