Any trip to Xunantunich Maya Site in Belize will bring you to San Jose Succotz, but one must venture away from the roadside vendor aisle and cable ferry entry to the ruins, and go up the hill to discover this small, sleepy Spanish-speaking village.
I only knew of San Jose Succotz after I had visited Xunantunich, and even then I hadn't done much exploring there. So it was a nice surprise when my fellow Michigander, ex-pat Jeff, and I took a trip to the Guatemalan border the other day and swung through the village.
On that Jeep ride I noticed a small chapel and knew I wanted to come back to photograph it. It's Belize and everyday is hot and humid, and thick cumulous clouds inched across the always blue hued sky when I went to shoot.
I put a couple shots in B & W because of how those puffy clouds made some scenes look foreboding. I also liked how the blue sky in the school scenes looked with the blue paint, and the dark green of the grass against the bright green on the school.
