Butterfly Falls | Mountain Pine Ridge Forest | Cayo District, Belize

Nestled in 7,200 acres of a private forest reserve, Butterfly Falls is one of the many tucked away cascades and falls on top of Pine Ridge in the Cayo District of Belize.  This waterfall is located on the private property of the Hidden Valley Inn.

Yesterday I woke at 4am to take a trip to Thousand Foot Falls in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve to capture it in the morning light.  It is quite a drive just to get there (see pics below of the road).  When I finally arrived about two hours after departing, the fog was so thick that it clouded the falls, which are usually visible only 100 yards from the viewing platform.  So that was a bust!  However I struck up a conversation with the park ranger living on-site, and he turned me on to a hidden area, Butterfly Falls, on “private property” that I could get to with my Jeep.  I learned it’s completely inaccessible unless you have 4WD.

So I journeyed to Butterfly Falls, which is along Roaring Creek in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, and I was in awe.  It is exactly what I pictured in my mind when I thought of hidden rainforest waterfalls.  A steep trail down wasn’t too treacherous until the end when I had to navigate very slippery rocks while clinging to a rope leading down to the creek bed and the brilliant Butterfly Falls, cascading 80 feet down into a green pool among the lush jungle.  A spiritual moment alone in the jungle!!
