Another Maya ruin site checked off the list! Today it was Cahal Pech, which is only a 10 minute walk uphill from downtown San Ignacio, Belize. It’s quite different from its nearest counterpart, Xunantunich, which is much more open space with El Castillo, the temple, dominating the site.
Cahal Pech is one of the more intimate Maya sites in the area, receiving fewer visitors than Xunantunich. Next to me and Natasha, there was only four other people there at dusk. I loved it! You get more of a sense of how it was when the Mayan people lived here, going through the excavated tunnels and small unearthed labyrinths among the trees that defy gravity, hanging to the sides of the structures.

Beautiful photos with such a nice narration about the Mayans. Only sites i have visited are in Mexico. They are really fascinating. Thanks for sharing this info.
Thanks so much! We actually drove through Mexico but didn’t get a chance to visit any there. We want to go to Coracol next, or Tikal in Guatemala.
Great to know about your next stops…All the best and Happy Traveling…:)
