Highland Park Cemetery | Ionia, Michigan
One of the most beautiful cemeteries I have seen, Highland Park Cemetery in Ionia, Michigan has it all.
From giant obelisks with statues atop and tributes to Civil war fallen, to hidden crypts and giant mausoleums. In honor of Memorial Weekend I took a quick trip to Ionia for a stroll around the grounds at dusk.
In June 2016, I was contacted first by the Sentinel Standard, the local paper of Ionia, Michigan, about the crypt in these images. Shortly after the Fox affiliate out of Grand Rapids, Michigan contacted me regarding the same tombs, as well as the Michigan State Police.
Apparently there was some concern that this tomb, a Civil War veteran’s final resting place along with his son’s, may have been destroyed.
No other pictures could be found of to show this gravesite actually existed except these.
That’s the magic of photography! I love making images to express myself artistically. But also it’s great when these images can be used to right someone’s wrong.
