So we decided to stay another night in Chetumal, Mexico for a couple of reasons. After 2 long days of difficult driving in the Yucatan, filled with tons of topes, or speed bumps (walls…basically…put at random places), we needed a day to relax. Also we wanted to look into rentals in Belize so I wouldn’t be stuck behind the wheel again for an entire day.
Oh ya, did I mention the two “roadblocks” we hit yesterday on the way from Villahermosa, MX to Chetumal? We initially thought they were accidents on the highway, and later learned that some political group intentionally blocks the entire road with two semis, extorting money from unlucky travelers. The first one we got lucky and I was able to sneak through. However at the second, we were surrounded by about 75 Mexicans yelling, “Money,” until I emptied out my change jar of pesos and they allowed us to continue. Scary stuff!
Anyway, on a brighter note, here are some sunset pics I took in Chetumal. Hoping tomorrow’s drive through Belize has less experiences of extortion.
