Cataract Falls | Indiana Waterfalls | Long Exposure Photography

I decided to do a tour of Indiana’s waterfalls, starting with Cataract Falls located within Lieber State Park in Cloverdale, Indiana.  Last week I made the hour and a half drive from Noblesville in the early evening.  I wanted to get to the waterfalls with about two hours before the sun set, so I could hike around and figure out my composition and see where the light was coming from.

I parked in the lot right next to the upper falls and walked around for a bit, then drove down to the lower falls to see what they had to offer.  I noticed a small group of people looking out over the cliffs onto the falls, and thought that would make for some nice shots…showing the scale of Cataract Falls.

I hiked down to the water level and took a few more shots, but the lighting just wasn’t right, so I headed back to the upper falls to set up for dusk.

Hiking down into the valley, I cautiously maneuvered out as far as I could into the river on the slippery rocks to get some straight-away shots, then ventured to the side for some vertical compositions of Cataract Falls.

With about thirty minutes left before the sun went down, I hiked back up the cliffs to where a group of smaller cascading waterfalls start the river’s descent into the bigger waterfall seen above.  This is where I ended up with my favorite shots, as the light turned a bluish hue and I used a longer exposure.  I love the blue hour!  I hope you like the shots of Cataract Falls, my first stop along my tour of Indiana’s waterfalls.

If you like waterfalls, you’ll love Belize’s Rio on Pools. This series of falls is located high up in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Read my article Rio On Pools | Lower Falls | Mountain Pine Ridge Forest | Cayo District, Belize to learn more.
