We crossed the border at 7:30am with no troubles; it took a total of 2 minutes as I answered yes and no to the questions, “Do you have any fruit? Do you have guns?” One Mexican border agent asked the questions while another lightly perused our belongings, not opening anything but our giant bin of camping gear. Then on to Mexico Highway 57 which we will use for all the day’s journey.
We passed through many small villages along the way, and made stops to get pesos, Mexican car insurance, our travel visas, and car permit. Acquiring Mexican car insurance was a bit of a process, which I will detail in a later post, but all in all the trip was fairly stress-free.
We weren’t able to make it to the planned stopping point of Matehuala, but that turned out great since Saltillo, where we stayed, is a scenic town of around 1 million people with a small town feel.
Saltillo has a historic city center that’s over 400 years old, and we were able to secure an inexpensive hotel in the heart of it. I will post town pictures on my next blog.
Seeing / reading this fills me with comfort. Hoping the rest of your trip through MX is as smooth and beautuful.
What a funny call from you the other night! Keep them coming it’s great to hear familiar voices being so far from home.
