We ended up in a town recommended by our new car insurance agent, Jesus, from Vitesse out of Monclova, Mexico.  He could not have been more pleasant and helpful, besides being spot on in suggesting we avoid Matehuala, our original first night destination, and stay in Saltillo.

We didn't arrive in town until close to dark, but were able to make it to the historic town square, which held the Saltillo Cathedral, one of the most beautiful baroque buildings in the country.

Driving into Saltillo, one can tell that the city is quite large, and we later found out it is the capital and largest city of the northeastern state of Coahuila.  Yet the area where our Premier Hotel was in, a steal for $33 USD by the way, had a small town vibe.

Looking Down the Road

Saltillo was settled in 1575 as part of the Spanish province of Nueva Vizcaya. From 1824 to 1836 Saltillo was the capital of a vast province that included what is now Texas and other areas of the U.S. Southwest.
